Wartime Kitchen

Wartime Kitchen

image above: 1940's upper middle class kitchen.

In some kitchens people cooked on a 'stove' heated by a coal or wood fire. The stove heated the room and cooked meals. Most kitchens had a gas cooker though some had electric cookers.

Cooking utensils were in short supply, aluminium being used in aircraft production, patriotic housewives had donated all their aluminium pots and pans to this end.

Not many people had a refrigerator. People went shopping to buy fresh food most days. To keep flies away from meat, they kept meat in a small cupboard called a 'meat safe'. They kept bread in a bread bin and biscuits in tins. Families ate some tinned foods, such as tinned meat, peas and baked beans, but hardly any frozen foods.

You could only buy fresh fruit grown in Britain, such as apples or pears. Fruits that had to come in ships, like bananas, vanished from the shops.

Many ships were being sunk by enemy submarines, and precious ship-space was needed for war materials (such as oil or guns) not bananas.

I used to have this really old refrigerator that was actually starting to rust on the outside. So, I just covered it with anything I liked, like this, from top to bottom.
When I finally bought a new fridge - that I didn't want to mess up with tape marks -I missed the old one!
I couldn't bear to part with this stuff, so I taped it into a notebook, and eventually scanned it.

ESB Observatory - GE Building & Central Park

ESB Observatory - GE Building & Central Park

The GE Building, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, is a slim gothic-inspired Art Deco skyscraper and the focal point of the Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan, New York City. At 850 ft (259 m) with 70 floors, it is the 7th tallest building in New York City and the 30th tallest in the United States.

It was built in 1933 and named the RCA Building. The Rockefeller family office, Room 5600, was immediately established on the 56th floor; it now covers three floors (54-56) of the building. The name of the building was changed in 1988, two years after General Electric (GE) re-acquired RCA. It was notable for being the first building ever constructed with the elevators grouped in the central core of the structure.

Freight Management Trucking in the 21st Century

The transportation of freight is one of the oldest and most important professions in the world. Freight is transported by aircraft, ship, and train. The trucking industry is the biggest shipping asset in America because the trucks can deliver freight from the shipyards, train yards, and airports to specific destinations. The trucking industry plays an important role in our economy.

A few major problems in the trucking industry need to be addressed to maintain a healthy economy. The trucking industry is one of the last industries that has not changed in over forty-five years. This is causing a big turnover rate with the truck drivers. The problem will only get worse in the future as younger generations grow up and enter into the trucking field. They may try to make truck driving their career of choice, but our economy may suffer as a result.

About the Author
I was born in Atlanta, GA. I attended Atlanta Area Schools, including Dekalb Junior College and Morris Brown College. After attending college, I opened and ran a beer and wine convenience store in Atlanta for five years. After placing orders with the wholesalers to restock my inventory, I realized I was solely depending on the truck drivers to deliver my freight so I could make a profit and support my family. As result, I decided to get into a challenging and rewarding industry, which plays an important role in the American economy and the global economy.

CHANGE

CHANGE

Change We Need Town Hall with Barack Obama - Farmington Hills, MI.

I missed last Bokeh Wednesday - so HBW everyone! This might be a bit of a stretch.

Anyhow, I was randomly selected to sit with a small group of people right behind the senator at his campaign stop earlier this week. Photography conditions weren't good, with giant spotlights pointing at us and a request from the organizers to not take photos, specifically from our seats.

It was a great event and worth all the hassle it took to get in. And there was a lot of hassle....believe me. Please register to vote and make the effort to be informed.

Been far too busy lately for much flickring....I'll try to get caught up in the next couple days.

HBW!

"Change; we don’t like it, we fear it, but we can't stop it from coming. We either adapt to change or we get left behind. And it hurts to grow, anybody who tells you it doesn’t is lying. But heres the truth: the more things change, the more they stay the same. And sometimes, oh, sometimes change is good. Oh, sometimes, change is ... everything."

i hate digital [analog remix]

i hate digital [analog remix]

remix hand written using analogue technology.

scanned, edited, uploaded and shared worldwide using digital technology. how else?

i hate digital.

i felt compelled.

finally, i had to do it.

the more i think about this statement, the more i needed to vent [a little].

where does this nonsensical, feeble minded idiocy come from?

if this statement is made with tongue firmly in cheek, i'll gladly turn the other way.

if this statement is made with any seriousness whatsoever it is simpleminded artistc racism, and should be treated with the same rancour and disdain offered to its more caustic, divisive and troublesome cousin.

repeat - i hate digital.

let us deconstruct.

i have to begin with the base and hilarious irony this statement affords us. after all, this is a group that lives on a digitally based image sharing platform. a group whose analog photographs must be digitised before uploading to aforementioned digital platform. priceless!

the statment also succeeds in the area that most 'i hate' statements succeed. it is immediately limiting in an artistic sense [we can discuss the fact that aesthetic limitation can sometimes lead to creative freedom in another comms thread].

it's akin to asking a writer to write a novel, then telling the writer that only 27 words from the dictionary may be used. or telling a pianist they can only use the black keys, and then only twelve of them.

why not form a flickr group and name it 'i love film'?

there are those analogue purists [sic] who argue that digital cameras, their affordability and sheer numbers, have let loose a huge plague of 'bad' photographs. a vast increase of noise to signal. what matters this? i think you should have the confidence that your work will be part of the signal, not part of the noise.

it seems to me that the digital revolution has offered a kind of democratisation that has only been equalled by such photographic innovations as the wonderful kodak 'brownie'.

it is ever thus that priests and prelates fear the ability to communicate be offered to the 'masses'.

goodness, it may affect the way we say what art is?

well. what is art?

i have no care either way.

as previously mentioned, you should have confidence in your work.

proliferation is not necessarily counter productive. it is more often productive.

though reactionary behaviour can often be suggestive.

like the catholic church raging and fighting against the translation of the bible from latin.

digital. analogue. telescope. microscope. science. thought.

whenever i see these types of behaviour, i think of dictatorships. of brown shirts. of burning books.

of ovens.

my tongue is partially in my cheek, though sometimes sticking out :p
